IRS Says Time is Running Out to Claim 2021 Tax Refunds

The IRS estimates that more than 1 million people across the country may have unclaimed tax refunds from tax year 2021, and they have until April 15 to submit their federal return.

The Internal Revenue Service estimates that over 1 million people across the country may have unclaimed tax refunds from tax year 2021, according to a news release Tuesday.

According to the IRS, those who have unclaimed tax refunds from tax year 2021 have until April 15 to submit their federal return. Taxpayers typically have three years to claim their return and whatever is left unclaimed goes to the United States Treasury.

The IRS estimates the average refund for that tax year amounts to $781, which does not include other credits such as the Recovery Rebate Credit.

In California, the IRS estimates about 116,300 people may have unclaimed tax refunds with a median potential refund of approximately $600.

Low- and moderate-income workers may also be eligible for Earned Income Tax Credits which helps individuals and families whose income is below a certain threshold based on the number of qualifying children.

Thresholds for 2021 were:

  • For those with three or more qualifying children: $51,464 for individuals or $57,414 for married couples who filed jointly.

  • For those with two qualifying children: $47,915 for individuals or $53,865 for married couples who filed jointly.

  • For those with one qualifying child: $42,158 for individuals or $48,108 for married couples who filed jointly.

  • For those without qualifying children: $21,430 for individuals or $27,380 for married couples who filed jointly. For anyone still needing to file previous years’ returns, they can request copies of their tax forms from 2021, 2022 or 2023 from their employers, banks or other payers.

If you are unable to get a copy of your tax forms, you can request a transcript to be mailed to you from the IRS. You can also request a Form 4506-T to request wage and income transcripts. However, requests for Form 4506-T could take weeks, according to the IRS.

The quickest way to file is by creating an IRS Individual Online Account, according to the news release. For more information about forms and instructions, you can visit the IRS’s website, IRS.gov.

For 2024, the filing deadline for tax returns is April 15.
